I’m observing multiple different species in multiple different stages of life living. Over the last few days I’m seeing a mother and father cardinal working with their son near the cat food bowl I’ve placed out that they also are nurtured by. That boy is something! Chirping so loudly and follows them so closely everywhere they go! How they nudge him to find the food for himself rather than them having to pick it up out of the bowl that is right beside him and pass the food from their mouth to his is perplexing. They are consistent with their efforts nudging him daily but it seems his instinct is to continue following them. The father standing perched on the food bowl was nudged back and off of the bowl by the son who instead of bowing and retrieving the food chased after his fathers flight a couple days ago. Today the mother nudged him towards the bowl but instead of perching on it he flew off. She quickly retrieved a piece of cat food and followed him. Progress continues.
The mother squirrel watched me from atop the carport roof nearby the entrance to the house soffit nesting area earlier. I could hear her moving atop the wall beside me as the sunset last night. This must be the fourth of fifth nesting of the year there.
As I made my way into the hammock for reflection shortly before noon I met with a juvenile box turtle neck outstretched beside a laid over mushroom with some slimly substance in it’s mouth. Becoming still and focused on the turtle I watched it eat the slug over a matter of minutes. It coughed afterwards. Turtles cough and I didn’t know that until today! Very quietly and then slowly moving away from the mushrooms that the slug had been consuming before becoming the turtle’s lunch. Ants scurring through the mud all around the turtle as I watch from above.
Baby fawns nesting in the tall grass outside the kitchen window and foraging in the street light in the night’s darkness.
All the dreams during my sleep as the waves of spinal fluid clear the cache of my mind offering me a smile and laughter upon the sun’s rise.
